Fibromyalgia and Punished Libidos

Fibromyalgia, a chronic pain syndrome, can wreak havoc on your sex life. Individuals with fibromyalgia experience muscle pain and stiffness, intense stress, low self-esteem, fatigue and anxiety. Imagine trying to have sex when you’re sore, feel self conscious, tired and worried?

What’s worse, fibromyalgia lowers the production of serotonin, a chemical that regulates mood, appetite, sleep and memory. So you remain not only tired, in pain and anxious, but also moody.

Overstressed, Unmotivated and Tired
Now sex can de-stress a person. It can allay thoughts of fear and doubt. Sex can even increase self-esteem and loosen up sore muscles and joints while boosting endorphin levels to counteract low serotonin. But fibromyalgia and its counterpart arthritis can stymie sex. And because fibromyalgia is triggered by stress, the pressure of your sexual performance exacerbates the situation.

Because most individuals with fibromyalgia feel depressed and take antidepressants, the use of these drugs too can reduce libido, increase erectile dysfunction and dry female genitals.
Fibromyalgia, and the medication used to treat it, also may cause substantial physical changes such as rashes, hair loss, scars, and weight gain or loss.  These changes can make a person feel self conscious, uncomfortable, insecure and unwanted.

Ready for Remedies
A few effective antidotes can help you regain your confidence and reclaim your sex life. Yoga, for example, proves beneficial in the general treatment of fibromyalgia, and may also add new spice to your sexual appetite!  Moist heat is another, more temporary solution.

Magnesium Malate is particularly helpful for women, as it is known to alleviate certain menstrual pains. It also comes in a variety of appetizing foods: green vegetables, whole grains, meats, chocolate and coffee.

Omega-3 combats low serotonin levels, nerve trouble and hormonal changes in both men and women.  “When serotonin levels decrease in the body, hormonal and nerve interactions alternate, which can create changes in mood as well as symptoms of erectile dysfunction in men.” So a diet rich in this powerful fish oil will help increase your libido and decrease E.D. symptoms.

Combining Omega-3, yoga and a hot tub bath might be perfect for one person, and less suitable for another. While there are many ways to treat fibromyalgia, try to find a combination treatment specific to your needs.

Collaborate to create a stress-free sexual environment and find the best positions that won’t place additional pressure on common painful areas like back and hips. Maybe incorporate a gentle massage that avoids known tender points, and, if you’re a woman, try placing a pillow between your knees or below your hips for support. Take herbal supplements to relieve from unknown chronic & adrenal fatigue causes...(more)

Know that these remedies, while effective, only work if you have open, honest communication with your partner and explore possible solutions together.
